Mass, Density & Volume Calculator
Calculate mass, density, or volume with step-by-step physics formulas. Includes material presets for water, steel, aluminum, concrete, and gold.
Dividing mass by the substance density calculates how much space that mass displaces.
Solves the fundamental physics relationship: Mass = Density × Volume (m = ρ × V), Volume = Mass / Density (V = m / ρ), or Density = Mass / Volume (ρ = m / V). For example, 2 cubic meters of concrete (density 2,400 kg/m³) has a mass of 4,800 kg (10,582 lbs).
Mass, Density & Volume Calculator Formula & Sizing Rules
| Variable | Definition | Standard Units |
|---|---|---|
| m | Mass or physical weight | kg or lbs |
| V | Volume of space occupied | m³ or ft³ |
| ρ (rho) | Volumetric mass density | kg/m³ or lb/ft³ |
How to Calculate Mass with Density and Volume
Density (ρ) measures how closely packed matter is within a given space. Multiplying density (mass per unit volume) by total volume cancels out the volume unit and yields total mass: Mass = Density × Volume. If you know an object’s weight and material density, dividing mass by density reveals its exact displacement volume.
Common Project Sizing Mistakes
- Mixing density units (e.g. g/cm³ with volume in cubic feet)
- Confusing mass (intrinsic quantity of matter) with weight in differing gravitational fields
